![]() ![]() It’s an iconic piece of music that plays as sound design, with even Grimes sampling it in her 2020 track “ So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth.” It’s a sound that was featured in the season three track “Dracarys” who’s drums are also filtered in this season 5 track. At the 26 second marker, there’s a particular reverberated bass that signals when Dragon breathes fire. In the episode The Dance of Dragons, as Daenerys and her followers are about to be attacked, Drogon, her dragon, saves them. One of the most important tracks in regards to Daenerys Targaryen, “Dance of Dragons” is a mystical piece of music. ![]() Djawadi’s genius add’s to this sequence, and truly makes it a horrifying watch, yet one that you can’t look away from. It’s a brilliant episode, and one that will be discussed for decades. As one of the main characters in the game of thrones, and the series is killed, bits of “Main Title” are infused. She attempts to get the Frey’s to spare him, but it’s in vain, as they kill him anyway. It dies down, as Catelyn pleads for Robb’s life. Chaos ensues, as the Stark men are slain without abandon, making for one of the most chilling pieces of music in the series. They rise and clash with horns, subtly mixing into a fast paced and ominous piece of music which builds upon itself. As Catelyn realizes her family has been betrayed, strings brim at the surface, and continue to get more urgent. On the eve of the wedding of Robb Stark and Talisa Stark nobody other than readers of the original novel could have expected the massacre that would occur in “The Rains of Castamere.” The track contains aspects of the Stark theme “Goodbye Brother” and even the series main theme “Main Title”. SEASON 3 – “ The Lannisters Send Their Regards” While most of the music in Game of Thrones is steady, this track is feverish and attempts to signal that nobody is safe this season (from corruption and murder, both). As He finally beheads Sir Rodrick, the track begins to fade out, as Theon stares at his men, crazed and ill because of what he’s done. It’s a heightened piece of music, and as Theon hacks at Sir Rodrick’s head, a sense of panic in his eyes as he can’t stomach executing the man on one swing, we as the audience know there’s no way he can turn back from this. Right as his sword swings, the build-up of the track explodes, drums and strings clashing against each other. After Sir Rodrick spits on him, Theon sees no other way to prove to his men that he is a leader, and attempts to behead him. The track slowly builds, drums casting an ominous sense over the scene. In “The Old God’s and the New,” Sir Rodrick Castle attempts to stop Theon and his men. ![]() With the last breath of the track, Catelyn reassures her son that yes, they will kill them all.Īs each family in the Seven Kingdoms prepares for war, Theon Greyjoy (the Starks ward and Robb Stark’s best friend) is influenced by his father and takes Winterfell from the Starks. Djawadi evokes pure emotion at the track’s 2-minute mark, with the instruments he’s utilizing sounding like they’re weeping with Catelyn and Robb. The two cling together as the track finally unleashes its full emotional potential, breaking into a cacophony of tragic strings. The song begins to build up as she sees her son Robb. As Catelyn breaches the forest, she clings to a tree and finally weeps. It builds up using the leitmotif of “Goodbye Brother,” which Djawadi commonly threads into other tracks when the Starks are on screen. As his wife Catelyn walks into the forest past her son’s bannermen, the track “Kill Them All” slowly trickles in. After Ned Stark’s shocking death at the hands of Joffrey Baratheon in King’s Landing, his family gets word in the North. But, when rewatching the series, it’s evident that Djawadin leaves hints all around, with leitmotifs sprinkled within other tracks. Disregarding the fantastic title sequence, for a lot of the season, the music goes unnoticed. With the series’ first season, at times it felt like the plot of Game of Thrones was above its musical counterpart. ![]()
